The M-11 Shtorm is a naval SAM system of Soviet origin. It was developed as a longer range and more accurate alternative to the M-1 Volna system. Unlike other naval SAM systems the M-11 Shtorm has no land based equivalent.
The M-11 Shtorm is a deep modernization of the M-1 Volna. It uses a modified launcher with optimized below deck storage, improved fire control radar and much improved missiles. The missiles have a new seeker and are nearly twice as fast as the V-600 used in the original version of the M-1 Volna.
The V-611 missiles use radio frequency command guidance. One or two missiles are launched against a single target at a time. Missile accuracy is improved over the older M-1 Volna by using semi-active radar homing in the terminal phase. The 4R60 fire control radar is used for missile guidance and target illumination.
The new missiles and terminal semi-active radar homing make the M-11 Shtorm a capable system. Targets can be engaged between altitudes of 100 m and 25 km. Maximum range is 3 to 30 km for the V-611 missile. The V-611M missile extends the maximum range to 55 km.
The M-11 Shtorm was fitted onto several large cruisers and aircraft carriers of the Soviet navy. All ships used two systems, allowing two targets to be engaged at a time.
The M-11 Shtorm launches the V-611 surface to air missile. In its original form it is known as the SA-N-3A. The improved Shtorm-M system uses the V-611M missile which is faster and has nearly twice the range. The NATO reporting name of the Shtorm-N is SA-N-3B.
The B-189 twin rail launcher is a modified ZIF-101 launcher. Below deck there is a rearranged reload system.
The 4R60 is an integrated set of fire control radars. These provide target acquisition, radio command guidance and illumination for the SARH final stage. NATO reporting name is "Head Lights".
